Laura Geller offered up face-transforming tips for women over 35.
The key is enhancing your face by working with it, not against it.
Plus, several products she recommends.
Laura Geller has a unique talent for helping women look their best at every age. The celebrity makeup artist has spent decades carefully crafting products for mature skin (at her eponymous beauty brand, Laura Geller Beauty) and bestowing practical advice on exactly how to do this. Recently she sat down with Prevention to talk to us about the major changes in our complexion that happen in our late 30s. But rather than clinging to the past and sticking with a routine that no longer serves us, Geller says that embracing change can actually be an opportunity.
“Every decade changes. We need to change the way we do our makeup,” she tells Prevention. “This is your time now to get ahead of the curve and really enhance the way you apply your makeup.”
That can mean a change in lotions, serums, sunscreen, and other skincare products. But it also means reassessing how we do our makeup—what products we use, what features need highlighting (or deemphasizing), and specifically how it interacts with aging skin.
Here are some of Geller’s best tips on transforming your beauty routine, specifically for women over 35.
1. Adjust your routine, but don’t reinvent it
It happens: your go-to foundation that once worked perfectly now settles into fine lines, or your favorite blush shade no longer brightens your complexion the same way. These shifts are normal and expected. The key is to update your products and techniques to work with what you have, not to fight against them.
First, be aware of the basic needs of your skin. Age often causes your skin to dry, but not always. “You may still be oily. You may still have large pores,” Geller says. “You need oil control powders. You need mattifying powders. You need setting powders.”
It can take trial-and-error to figure out what still works and what doesn’t, but paying attention and being willing to accept what you learn about your skin and your features at this new age is the first step.
2. Know the difference between shine and glow
Geller urges people to differentiate between shine and glow when figuring out what makeup works for them—especially as they age. “Shine is not what we’re looking for. Glow is what we’re looking for,” she stresses.
“If you’re shiny from oils, or maybe it’s just your skin going through changes, you want to really mattify your skin,” she explains.
Skin can become more oily for a number of reasons, including fluctuating hormones, stress, and even the products we use. Geller recommends “mattifying” your face with products like hers Matte Maker Translucent Setting Powder hrs Brighten-n-Blur Spackle Skin Perfecting Primerwhich can reduce the appearance of oil on the skin without causing it to look dry or patchy.
3. Use makeup to enhance, not hide
Perhaps the most important of all is making sure that you’re choosing products that work with you and highlight your best features, rather than focusing on covering up the changes in your face and skin as you age. We love
“Enhancement is about looking like yourself, not letting the makeup stand in front of you,” Geller says. “So as a makeup artist of a lot of years, whether you’re 30, whether you’re 80, 90, below or beyond, I’m always going to put makeup on you that enhances your features, but that doesn’t really scream ‘makeup.’ That’s really important.”
