Japanese Power Rangers Source Series Ends After 50 Years

The original Japanese series that served as the basis for Power Rangers is officially ending after 50 years, closing out with its latest season. In the United States, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury ended the main timeline for the franchise. However, this hasn’t stopped the original series, Super Sentaifrom continuing its production in Japan, releasing new seasons annually.

Now, according to a report from Kyodo News, Super Sentai will be ending with its current ongoing season, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger. The decision to end the series from which Power Rangers originated comes after revenue for the series declined below production costs. This marks the end of an era for Japanese TV, given the action series’ 50-year run.

Super Sentai began in 1975, featuring a team of superheroes with color-coded outfits defending the world. Much like Power Rangers shows, the series sees them use giant mechas, known in the US as “Zords,” to fight large threats. The franchise has produced 49 seasons, each with a new team and storyline for them to undergo.

The current season began airing on TV Asahi network on February 16, 2025. Episode 37 is set to air on Sunday, November 9, with new episodes airing every Sunday until the series comes to a close. The series’ close ties to Power Rangers marks an end of an era, not just for Japanese TV, but for American-based production as well.

Super Sentai is one of many Japanese productions in the tokusatsu genre, featuring live-action special effects while aiming for an audience of young adults. Other famous series in the genre include Kamen Rider and Ultramanboth of which are ongoing as well as writing. This makes the series one of the first long-running shows in the genre to end.

on Despite Super Sentai ending, there are still plans from American studios to bring Power Rangers back to public consciousness. In March 2025, it was announced Hasbro and 20th Television are creating a new series, with Jonathan E. Steinberg & Dan Shotz in talks to serve as showrunners. It was confirmed Toei Company, creators of Super Sentaiwon’t be involved.

With Super Sentai coming to a close, it marks a major end of an era for Power Rangers. Now, neither the American version nor the original Japanese series that inspired won’t air anymore. While the Japanese franchise has been airing on television for many years, it seems its time has come, despite how much of a staple it’s been.
