A little-known car button could save you money on fuel – but it turns out people have been using it all wrong. Here’s how you should be using it when driving
Are you making the most of every button in your car? It’s likely that you’re not because apparently a lot of us aren’t using a specific button to its full potential.
And if you learn how to use the button correctly it could help you save money on fuel. That button is none other than the air conditioning control – and it’s not just about pressing it whenever you need to cool down your vehicle.
Taking to TikTok, online content creator Arya, who goes by @Driver_Arya_ on the platform, suggested that “99% of people don’t know the correct usage of the air conditioning button”. “Do you know what the air conditioning button in your car is for?” she posed the question to her followers.
Arya elaborated: “Many people think that it can only be used to adjust the temperature. Wrong. In fact, it has many hidden functions. If you learn it, not only can it save fuel, it can also save your life at a critical moment.”

According to the content creator, who often shares ‘driving knowledge’ online, when driving in summer, you should press the AC button, but also press the ‘inner loop’ button, which will cause air to circulate in the car. This means your car isn’t bringing in hot air from outside, just to cool it down.
Arya then explained that if you’re driving in winter you should turn off the AC button, and then press the outer loop, which will draw in fresh air from outside. “This way the glass won’t frost easily,” she added. “This is very fuel efficient.”
If it’s raining outside, Arya recommends turning on the AC button as well as the outer loop, and then make sure to turn the dial so that the air flow is only directed at your windshield. “So even on rainy days the glass won’t fog up,” the car expert explained.
According to the content creator, you should also consider turning the AC button on if you’re stuck in a traffic jam, and while she said you need to click the ‘outer loop’ button, many pointed out that she must have meant the ‘inner loop’, because otherwise the fumes from outside would come inside the car.
A spokesperson from Eden Tires previously warned that during the winter, when it’s cold outside, the air circulation button should be turned off. They added: “The air-recirculation button is best to use alongside your AC during warm weather. During cooler weather, it doesn’t have many benefits and can even be detrimental.
“Some drivers think it makes sense not to have ‘all that cold air coming in’ if they are using heaters in winter. However, it’s best to have your air recirculation turned off.” This is because when it’s cold outside, recirculating air can trap moisture inside, causing your windshield and windows to fog.
