Some of the big names that are down this morning include Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE and Sky, as well as Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland
Dozens of websites and apps are down today following a global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage.
AWS powers the infrastructure behind many digital platforms, but the service is currently experiencing issues – meaning a large number of online services are currently not working properly.
This includes Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE and Sky, as well as the websites and apps of major UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland. The HMRC website has also been down today.
AWS has confirmed it has identified the potential cause of the issue and says most services are now coming back. The latest update reads: “We continue to observe recovery across most of the affected AWS Services.
“We can confirm global services and features that rely on US-EAST-1 have also recovered. We continue to work towards full resolution and will provide updates as we have more information to share.”

An earlier update said: “We have identified a potential root cause for error rates for the DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region.
“Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1. We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery. This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region.
“Global services or features that rely on US-EAST-1 endpoints such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables may also be experiencing issues.
“During this time, customers may be unable to create or update support cases. We recommend customers continue to retry any failed requests.”
Downdetector showed a spike in reports on Monday morning, including more than 2,681 at AWS.
