According to experts, you plow actually get too much of a good thing. For example, there are beauty products that are daily essentials for professional makeup artists that, for the rest of us, aren’t necessary to use every day. Anything that can dry the skin or damage the skin barrier may be better off in a professional makeup kit—not within arm’s reach on the bathroom counter at home.
What exactly is the “skin barrier”? Simply put, it’s the topmost level of the upper layer of skin, the epidermis. This top section of the skin has layers of its own, and the very top layer that you can see is called the stratum corneum. At a microscopic level, this is made up of about 30 layers of flat, dead, protein-filled cells that mix with fat and water to create a barrier. This “skin barrier” keeps moisture in the body and protects us from toxins, bacteria and UV rays.
Products with certain alcohols and sodium lauryl sulfate have, unfortunately, been Show to cause irritation to the skin barrier. SD alcohol, denatured alcohol (also listed as alcohol denat.) or isopropyl alcohol can cause inflammation and stimulate oil glands to increase oil production. Often, products with alcohol are marketed towards consumers with oily skinand although they’re temporarily mattifying, they can actually make oily skin worse.
Now, a makeup artist is calling out a popular makeup product that commonly contains alcohol, and should be used sparingly.

The Beauty Product To Avoid Using Every Day, According to a Makeup Artist
Setting spray commonly contains alcohols that can be harmful to the skin. It shouldn’t be used daily, Emmy-winning makeup artist Nyssa Green tells Parade.
“I love it as a professional makeup artist, but it has crossed over into the masses, and no one needs to be using it every single day,” she explains, stressing that it’s fine to use setting spray for special occasions, but there’s no need to include it in your daily makeup routine.
What Is Setting Spray?
According to Green, setting spray is a mist intended to help makeup last longer, and professional makeup artists may even stack makeup and setting spray in multiple layers for clients who can’t have their makeup budget.
“It’s hairspray for your face, basically,” she tells Paradeexplaining that she uses it on news anchors and brides, and other clients who can’t have their makeup fade. “But if you’re just going to Kroger, you don’t need it.”

How To Make Makeup Last Without Using Setting Spray
For your everyday look, Green recommends using powder to set makeup.
“Don’t be afraid of powder,” she explains, even if you have mature skin. “Powder does not need to be your enemy if you’re older and you have fine lines. If you have the right powder, it won’t settle in and you will still get the setting effect, which can also blur out fine lines.”

Green recommends using a “teeny tiny” amount, a light dusting where you need it and then blending it in. She especially loves Face Atelier’s products for all skin types and ages.
