In an unprecedented medical achievement within the British health care system (NHS), a 75-year-old British man became the first person to have his face printed with 3D printing technology, after he lost his original features due to a terrible accident caused by a drunk driver who was using his phone while driving.

According to this story, the incident happened in July 2021, when Dave Richards, the father of four children from Devon County, was cycling with his friends on the A303 road near the town of Mir, before being hit by a reckless driver driving at high speed while he was on the phone and under the influence of alcohol.

With the opening of the 3D Bristol Medical Center in France – the first center of its kind in Britain to combine scanning, design and printing within an NHS facility – Richards became one of the first patients to benefit from this revolutionary technology.

And the patient got a face mask that completely matched his skin, hair and eyes, it was decided after a series of cleaning operations and digital sampling using candlesticks and multi-faceted images.

As for the driver who caused the accident, he was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison and banned from driving for seven years, except that he was released after 18 months only, and he did not consider Richard’s injustice, saying: “I lost my life and did not suffer daily pain, while the sentence was only half the term.”

And at the end of the conversation, Richard expressed his gratitude to the medical team and all those who supported him in the treatment journey, stressing: “I will be willing to try any new treatment that gives me hope or improves my life, as long as the risk is reasonable.”
