Welcome To Derry’s Multi-Season Development Gets Encouraging Update From Showrunners

Following the premiere of IT: Welcome to Derrythe beloved horror franchise is finally back, only this time through the world of television. IT: Welcome to Derry episode 1 didn’t waste any time putting the audience through the scary lens of the supernatural threat.

While ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan spoke with the IT: Welcome to Derry cast, co-showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane gave more details on how they are envisioning the future of the series, as there are definitely plans for additional seasons. Fuchs commented, “That’s the plan, but someone’s gotta let us,” even HBO has yet to formally announce a season 2 pick-up.

“Obviously, IT goes to sleep and wakes up in 27-year increments. We were laser focused on this chapter in the IT lore, but we know that 27 years before, there was other creepy stuff going on in Derry,” Fuchs explained. But with the HBO drama, it’s about expanding upon the mythology.

Fuchs elaborated that “We know a little bit of what’s suggested, in terms of that previous IT cycle, based on the Mike Hanlon interludes in the original book. So yeah, if audiences wanted to go for the ride, we’d obviously be delighted.”

Caleb Kane confirmed that “Andy (Muschietti) wanted to do the interludes of the book, which were never done,” when tackling the prequel series. With the show revisiting the terror of Pennywise, the co-showrunner added, “So you’re talking about every 27 years that Pennywise comes out, the entity comes out, and he terrorizes Derry.”

The fellow writer also highlights that there is a lot of territory to be explored in the timeline they are visiting throughout the series, stating that, “So in ’89, he comes out, he’s the clown. 27 years prior, you come back and you’re in 1962, and you can do a story about America in 1962, which, obviously, an entity that uses fear and terror to divide and terrify, you can imagine what’s going on in America in 1962.”

Caleb Kane confirms that “we delve into some of that, so we wanted to do that aspect of the story. You go back another 27 years, and you have the Depression and bank robbers and a gangster movie, and the Bradley gang.”

In conclusion, the co-showrunner stressed that they can really tap into a lot of the interludes, “You go back another 27 years, you have 1908. So he really wanted to do just all of these interludes that you see in the book, and he wanted to bring those to life, so that was his idea.”
