Everything you need to know about Hugh Grant’s upcoming horror film ahead of its release

Hugh Grant stars in Heretic, a horror thriller film directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of its release on Friday

Hugh Grant has enchanted audiences over the years with his romance and comedy films and now he’s set to show off his acting prowess in the horror genre with a film called Heretic.

The horror thriller is all set to be released in cinemas this Halloween on October 31, perfect for some scares on the most terrifying night of the year.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who are the writers of A Quiet Place, have directed the film which sees Hugh take on the horror genre for the first time.

The actor stars as Mr Reed and the film also stars Sophie Thatcher as Sister Barnes, Chloe East as Sister Paxton, Topher Grace as Elder Kennedy and Elle Young as Prophet.

The plot of the movie follows two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who attempt to convert a Scottish man.

However, their task proves to be even more dangerous than they had anticipated, leading to grave consequences for everyone involved.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8 and has already opened up to rave reviews from critics.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of 56 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.5 out of 10.

The trailer of the film shows Sister Barnes (played by Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) trying to stop people on the street to let them know about the religion.

After doing door knocks to provide more information, they are met by Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), who invites them into his home.

Although the trailer has purposefully tried not to show too much for fear of revealing enough, it provides plenty of eerie moments.

One scary moment shows the two girls standing at the top of a flight of stairs as they look down into a dark basement.

Mr Reed can be heard saying: “It will make your hearts beat faster, it may even make you want to die.”

Fans have been flocking to the comments section on YouTube to express their excitement after watching the teaser clip.

One viewer commented: “Not giving away the entire plot or relying on a barrage of jump scares, simply introducing the setting and building the atmosphere. Yeah, that was a well-made trailer.”

Another person said: “I’ve never been so happy for an actor to outlive their romcom years. Hugh Grant is a powerhouse and he finally gets to show off his range.”

While a third added: “I love what Hugh Grant is doing with his career. Playing on people’s perceptions of him must be so much fun!”

Heretic releases in cinemas this Halloween, on October 31.
