Battlefield 6’s REDSEC Battle Royale Releases Tomorrow

To the surprise of almost no one, the battle royale companion mode to Battlefield 6 has been revealed just one day ahead of its launch. Developer Battlefield Studios and publisher Electronic Arts have been teasing the franchise’s second attempt at a battle royale since BF6‘s big multiplayer reveal, but it’s been kept under wraps as an apparent surprise – albeit a very poorly kept one.

Battlefield has now revealed that the BR, called Battlefield: REDSECwill be released tomorrow, October 28at 11:00 AM ET (15:00 UTC). The name REDSEC is an amalgamation of “redacted sector,” apparently a nod to the game mode’s map, which is rumored to be named Lyndon Beach. The free-to-play battle royale has been something of an open secret, with dataminers and leakers even claiming for a couple of weeks now that REDSEC will release alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1, which is also starting on October 28.

Battlefield 6‘s battle royale has thus far only received a short teaser trailer and a few mentions in various patch notes. Revealing the title just one day before it is released implies Battlefield Studios and EA wanted to keep it a surprise, but it has been suspected to be releasing on October 28 for some time alreadyand shooter news account ModernWarzone even leaked the REDSEC title three days early.

REDSEC‘s release alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1 is a huge boon to the game’s immediate post-launch support. Season 1 itself will bring two new maps, new weapons, and more to the main multiplayer modes. With little official information on REDSECit still remains quite mysterious, but is expected to graft Battlefield 6‘s classes and vehicle prominence onto the classic battle royale formula.

No Entry Fee Makes All The Difference

REDSEC is Battlefield‘s second attempt at a battle royale mode, following Firestormwhich was attached to Battlefield V well after its release (BFV domestic intelligence agency launched in November 2018, Firestorm followed in March 2019). Firestorm beat Call of Duty: Warzone to market, but was unpolished despite being generally well received. Firestorm‘s biggest detractor was only being available with a purchase of Battlefield Va game that proved to be divisive upon launch.

Battlefield: REDSEC will have immediate and broad appeal by being free-to-play, but still has a tall task ahead of itself. The battle royale genre is well-established at this point, with PUBG: Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Apex Legendsand the aforementioned Warzone firmly situated as the big four. Battlefield 6 is setting sales records, though, and has a lot of momentum behind it. REDSEC coming so quickly after release will surely capture a lot of the excitement, and could prove to be a major contributing factor to Battlefield 6‘s ongoing success.
