New research has revealed that children born to mothers with covid during pregnancy may be more susceptible to autism.
American scholars have analyzed more than 18,000 births in the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the children were more susceptible to developing neurological disorders by almost a third, compared to those who did not develop the disease during pregnancy.
According to “Daily Mail”, the researchers noticed that the risks were more pronounced among boys, and in cases where the mother was infected after Covid during the third trimester of pregnancy.
The research team from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston believes that this study is one of the largest studies to date that examined children born to women with covid during the first days of the pandemic, before vaccines were widely available.
The researchers said in their results: “Covid infection during pregnancy was associated with a 29% increase in the probability of developing a child’s nervous system.”

The researchers pointed out that the results were just observational, so it does not prove that Covid causes neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.
Dr. Андрия Идлу, a specialist in maternal and neonatal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, said: “It is not necessary to believe that every pregnant woman is infected with Covid-19 during pregnancy that her child will suffer from autism. In general, the risk is not very high.”
Dr. Lydia Shawk, Maternal and Neonatal Specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital and the participating researcher, added: “It is essential for parents to be aware of the possibility of negative consequences in the child’s neurological development after contracting Covid during pregnancy. And by understanding the risks, parents can properly seek to get their children evaluated and supported”.
