A recent medical study revealed the latest reason for the deterioration of brain health and the decline of human cognitive abilities.
The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease magazine pointed out that the study conducted by scholars from the University of Southern California found that fluctuations in blood pressure contribute to the deterioration of brain health and cognitive abilities, according to لینتا.رو.
The study included 105 elderly volunteers who do not suffer from significant neurological impairment, and using MRI technology and accurate sensors to monitor blood pressure with each heart beat, the researchers found that the participants who recorded the highest blood pressure fluctuation rates with reduced blood vessel elasticity showed a decrease in the volume of memory areas in the brain and increased indicators of nerve cell damage, regardless of age or average blood pressure level.
The study also showed that frequent fluctuations in blood pressure between pulses are associated with a decrease in the volume of the inner ventricles and cortex – both areas responsible for memory and learning – in addition to increased levels of nerve cord protein (NfL), which is an indicator of nerve cell damage.
The researchers believe that the instability of blood pressure causes pressure on the blood vessels in the brain, and it can lead to fine tissue injuries, similar to those that occur in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, so scientists believe that monitoring blood pressure fluctuations, not just the average, may be an important way to prevent cognitive decline.
