«الصحة» launches the first phase of the «المشروعات خدراء» initiative to improve the performance of the public hospitals

The Ministry of Health and Population announced the start of the first phase of the “green projects” initiative, which aims to improve the environmental performance of hospitals and government health facilities, through the implementation of environmentally friendly practices, and to reduce resource consumption, contributing to the improvement of the environment and the existence of health services provided to citizens.

The initiative comes in implementation of the directives of Dr. Khalid Abdel Ghafar, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Health and Population, by working to achieve a number of environmental results, which include reducing electricity and water consumption, implementing a primary system for recycling medical waste, and raising environmental awareness among workers in health facilities, as the “green projects” initiative is part of the Ministry of Health and Population’s focus on integrating environmental sustainability concepts within the government health sector, in line with the national strategy for sustainable development and the vision of “Egypt 2030”.

In this context, Dr. Hussam Abdul Ghafar, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Population, explained that this foundational stage of the initiative focuses on the formation of the “green team” in each hospital, which includes representatives of the medical, engineering, environmental, financial, legal, and administrative departments, with the aim of developing practical plans to improve the efficiency of energy and water consumption, and to develop waste management methods that are appropriate for the nature of each facility.

“Abdel Ghafar” added that the implementation of the initiative will be carried out gradually, according to the results of the technical evaluation and the rates of response and implementation in the first stage, indicating that the expansion of the initiative will be carried out in stages, taking into account the individuality of each facility, and ensuring the achievement of the targeted environmental goals efficiently and sustainably.

For her part, Dr. Rasha Al-Sharqawi, Director of the Central Administration of Strategic Management, confirmed that the Ministry is currently working in coordination with the Health Affairs Directorates on forming technical teams in hospitals and determining the appropriate executive procedures for each institution, noting that the first stage is a foundational stage for building a scalable and repeatable model, while providing technical and operational support to participating hospitals.

In the same context, Dr. Fatima Nassar, director of the General Administration for Health Planning and Policies, pointed out that the initiative represents an important step towards enhancing the efficiency of work within government hospitals, adding that the ministry expects the initiative to contribute to reducing any waste of resources, and creating a safer and more sustainable health environment, which benefits the patient and the service provider, and enhances the ability of the health sector to adapt to future environmental challenges.
