With a new CEO at the helm this year, the United Way of Tarrant County is rolling out a new battle plan to tackle some old problems.
After hosting a series of town halls over the last few weeks, Adam Powell has created a new plan for his organization to better meet community needs.
He says they’ve narrowed their focus to key areas, including:
- Early childhood literacy: Powell said there’s a third-grade literacy crisis in the county, which can be tied to long-term outcomes like homelessness/incarceration.
- Financial insecurity: A third of residents are living paycheck to paycheck.
- Maternal mortality rates: Fort Worth ranks the 2nd highest in the state for black women maternal mortality. The United Way hopes to address disparities by improving access to care with technology and system coordination.
Powell says he’s hoping to partner with more nonprofits instead of competing with them and aims to use new technology like AI to compile data to focus on neighborhoods in need. The technology will also be used to try some new strategies in education.
“We’ll continue to be the community mobilizers that we’ve always been, really bringing people together around some of these really complex issues,” Powell said. “But we also want to lean more into innovation. I think one of the unique things about just the way society has evolved is there are tools in our tool belt now that we didn’t have when some of these issues bubbled up. 10, 15, 20 years ago. And as a problem-solving nonprofit, it’s really incumbent upon us to really deploy those in a way that allows us to solve some of those problems and maybe accelerate it in some ways.”

The United Way of Tarrant County board approved the new strategic plan at its last meeting.
They say some new programs, including some involving the use of AI, will start rolling out in just a couple of months at the beginning of the new year.
“So you think AI, you think virtual reality, augmented reality, and some of these things. And I think the existential question is, how can we partner with nonprofits, bring those tools to the table, and really help accelerate problem solving? Whether that’s an education space, whether that’s in maternal health and a host of others,” Powell said.
