The Asset is off to a strong start on Rotten Tomatoes after jumping into the Netflix top 10 charts. Releasing on October 27, the Danish crime thriller show follows agent Tea (Clara Dessau) as she infiltrates a criminal organization, becoming attached to a drug lord’s girlfriend in the process.
Following the release of its six-episode first season, The Asset now ranks as the number one TV show on Netflix worldwidebeating Nobody Wants This, Boots, Physical: Asia, The Monster of Florenceand Selling Sunsetamong other titles. This viewership dominance now accompanies a generally positive response from critics.
Although only five reviews have been added as of this writing, The Asset currently enjoys an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. This score, of course, is likely to fluctuate as more reviews come in, but it nevertheless marks a respectable start for a series that is already poised to be a win with Netflix subscribers.
Despite viewership strong enough to push it to the top of Netflix’s worldwide TV top 10 chart, there currently aren’t enough user reviews to generate a Popcornmeter score. From the three available to view, though, which are all positive, The Asset could be poised to debut with a strong audience score in the coming days.
Considering it’s still the first week of The Asset‘s availability on Netflix, it being in the top 10 isn’t necessarily surprising, but the fact that it’s number one could signal that it will continue to enjoy a spot on the list in the weeks to come. This ultimately bodes well for a potential season 2, which does not yet have the green light.
The positive reviews are another promising sign that the series will continue to be a viewership draw. The Asset‘s positive reviews praise the compelling character drama amidst moments of high suspense and intrigue, and the performances from Dessau, Maria Cordsen, Nicolas Bro, Afshin Firouzi, and Soheil Bavi, among others, are said to be strong.
One criticism present in several reviews, though, is that The Asset does sometimes feel predictableespecially considering its genre. Netflix has a number of crime thriller shows on offer for viewers now, including hits like Black Rabbit, Ozarkand Untamedand it sounds like The Asset may struggle to fully differentiate itself in terms of its genre conventions.
That being said, there is evidently comfort to be found in a well-executed crime thriller, and The Asset could push past these criticisms, connecting to viewers because of its compelling characters. Attachment to characters, after all, is often what pushes viewers to watch the entirety of a show, and this could lead to more episodes arriving in the future.
