An American Horror Story icon is returning for the show’s 13th season as Ryan Murphy confirms the first round of casting for his hit horror series. Just two years after creating the hit musical series GleeMurphy sets his sights on the horror genre with the anthology show American Horror Storywhich has been on the air since 2011.
Seven years after her first appearance, Jessica Lange will return for lucky number 13. She last appeared in the Apocalypse season in 2018, reprising the role of Constance Langdon from Murder House. She won’t be the only one returning, though.
In addition to Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Ariana Grande, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman have also joined the American Horror Story season 13 cast after appearing in various Murphy shows, including AHSover the years.
Ryan Murphy Productions made the announcement in an Instagram post that unveiled each cast member’s name before finishing with these words: “Surprise, b****. I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”
While a specific premiere date hasn’t been revealed yet, the Instagram post did announce that American Horror Story season 13 would arrive on FX in time for Halloween 2026.
Check out Murphy’s full announcement below:
A fall 2026 premiere means that American Horror Story will have taken a two-and-a-half-year hiatus between the 12th and 13th seasons, which is the longest break the show has ever had. Aside from 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic pushed AHS by a year, the horror series has aired a new season every single year since its debut.
Even though American Horror Story is an anthology series, Murphy has been known to bring cast members back for completely new roles. There have even been times when he revisited a past story, like Apocalypsewhich revisited Murder House, Coven and Hotel.
Lange has been a fan-favorite cast member since the beginning. However, she left after the fourth season, Freak Showand only returned as a guest star for Apocalypse.
Paulson has been a mainstay in the AHS cast since 2011 as well, although she didn’t appear in the three most recent seasons: 1984, NYC and Delicate. She can next be seen in Murphy’s new legal drama All’s Fairwhich premieres November 4 on Hulu.
Out of all the cast members who have just been confirmed for American Horror Story season 13, Grande is the only one who has never appeared in the horror series before. However, she isn’t a stranger to Murphy’s shows, nor Grande had a recurring role in Scream Queens season 1.
The past year has seen Grande’s career soar over the past year after starring as Glinda alongside Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in Wicked. The sequel, Wicked: For Goodhits theaters on November 21.
Murphy has created and produced numerous shows over the years, but American Horror Story has been one of the few consistent projects that he keeps returning to. While there’s no telling if the series will continue after 2026, at least fans have a new season to look forward to next year with Lange finally returning.
