Bird droppings are extremely acidic and can cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to your car if you leave them for too long – but there is a cheap and easy way to remove them
If you’re a car owner, you’ll be all too familiar with the annoyance of finding your vehicle splattered with bird droppings after parking under a tree.
But did you know that these pesky deposits can cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to your car if not cleaned off promptly? Bird poo is highly acidic and corrosive, meaning it can eat away at your car’s paintwork and cause damage to the body if left unattended.
It’s also sticky, making it difficult to remove from your car’s clear coating. Car experts at Your Red Car warn that this could end up costing you a pretty penny, with the average cost to repair a chip in your paintwork ranging from £60 to £210. However, there’s a simple trick to remove bird droppings without damaging your paintwork. Experts suggest using a damp cloth if you catch the droppings early enough.

If they prove stubborn, try using a car shampoo like Halfords Car Wash, which retails at £2 for a 500ml bottle. And if all else fails, WD-40 spray is recommended. The experts explain: “This highly effective spray will penetrate the droppings making them easy to wipe away. To complete the process, car shampoo and a cloth will be needed to remove the remaining residue.”
Halfords sell a 100ml aerosol can of WD-40 for just £2.50, while Poundshop prices theirs at £1.50. You could save a whopping £55.50 on car maintenance by tackling bird droppings with a simple £2 car shampoo, or at most £4.50 if you add WD-40 to the mix, instead of shelling out £60 for professional paintwork repairs.
Denton Brock, head of Your Red Car, explained: “Regularly cleaning a vehicle is vital for a number of reasons. Firstly, it helps to maintain the appearance of a vehicle and prevent the build-up of dirt, grime, and other debris that can damage the paintwork over time.”
He added: “Regular cleans will also help prevent the build-up of harmful substances like tree sap, bug residue, and road salt, which can cause permanent damage if left unchecked. In a worst-case scenario, you could end up with a hefty bill for a professional service treatment, so it’s vital to wipe these clean as soon as you spot them.
“Ultimately this will help to maintain the value of a car by avoiding the build-up of rust and other corrosive materials that can cause structural damage. Having a clean vehicle improves safety by ensuring that windows, mirrors, and headlights are clean and free from obstruction. Cleaning is an essential part of car maintenance that can help extend the life of a vehicle and keep it looking and running its best.”
