This Controversial 1990s Beauty Trend Might Be Coming Back, And We’re Scared

The resurgence of trends that were popular back in the 1990s came first as quite the surprise. Any decade that applauded frosted lipstick and butterfly clips (on adults) leads us to question a bit of beauty-related authority. While we can get behind the comeback of claw clips and brown mascara, we’re not so invested in bringing back a quite controversial 1990s signature: thinned-out eyebrows.

Looking Back on Pencil-Thin Brows

Thin eyebrows, of the not-natural, over-plucked varietywere a prominent beauty preference in the 1990s all the way into the early 2000s. After that, many pluck-happy past offenders suffered quietly as they attempted to coax growth back above their eyes. Which leads us to now, when a resurgence of thin eyebrows has been looming in the fashion and beauty sphere, threatening to bring your tweezers back to the table.

We’d be remiss not to touch on the fashionably thinned-out brows of the 1920s, made popular by Old Hollywood celebrities and silent film actresses who favored the statement-making look and its exaggerated way of conveying a constant look of surprise and emotion.

In the 2010s and beyond, brow shapes that were thicker and more natural took over, which made it easier on everyone overall. Limiting prep time to just a swipe of brow gel, it was the finest form of rebellion we’ve seen. While it still seems to be in favor, some trendsetters are headed back the other direction.

Is There a Thin Eyebrow Comeback?

Now, there’s been signs of the over-plucked brows of yesteryear making a comeback, and we’re wrought with concern. As much as we want everyone to have whatever brow shape they prefer, there are real consequences of such a trend. Namely, that they won’t grow back after the trend moves on. We saw plenty of that post-1990s, and some still suffer from the dreaded tadpole-shaped brows as a result, even decades later.

It’s hard to tell how your brows might react to being plucked into submission, but as always, to each their own! Whichever brow shape, coloror the style you prefer is what is most important. Just use those tweezers with care.
