Terrifier star Catherine Corcoran has filed a lawsuit against the horror movie franchise, which contains allegations of abuse and financial fraud. Corcoran portrayed Dawn in 2018’s TerrifierTara’s best friend and one of the first people killed by Art the Clown. Her character was strung upside down and sawed in the first movie’s most visceral and gory sequence.
Now a report from Entertainment Weekly reveals Corcoran filed a lawsuit in California federal court on Sunday, October 26. The lawsuit alleges her contract from the first Terrifier movie has not been fulfilled, suffering both sexual harassment and financial fraud as a result.
The lawsuit claims Corcoran agreed with director Damien Leone, producer Phil Falcone, and the film’s production companies that she would receive 1% of profits from all Terrifier movies and merchandise, even in films she didn’t appear in. on Despite Terrifier‘s massive box office success since its first installment, Corcoran has allegedly only been paid $8,000 to date for her work.
The agreement was made after Corcoran agreed to be paid the Screen Actors Guild’s $100 daily minimum for her work, given the movie’s small budget. In addition, her lawsuit alleges Leone and Falcone did not get written consent from her for multiple nude scenes, despite said consent being part of her contract.
The lawsuit’s abuse allegations range from Corcoran filming in “freezing“buildings, sometimes without bathrooms, becoming painfully trapped on a piece of plywood while making a silicone body cast for her death scene, and Leone”placing prosthetics with actual rat feces” on her while using actual duct tape over her mouth. “(N)umerous still photographs” of her nude were also allegedly taken without consent.
Additionally, the lawsuit alleges Corcoran was told she was “required” to film her death scene topless, but didn’t offer written consent for it. Her upside-down suspension during the 10-hour shooting session resulted in brain swelling and eardrum damage. Merchandise of her character naked has also been sold, which the lawsuit alleges happened without her written consent.
The lawsuit claims the creators involved violated California’s civil code for distributing nude and sexual imagery by not receiving Corcoran’s consent beforehand. The Terrifier cast member has not disclosed the amount of money for which she is suing. The lawsuit is demanding to get an accounting of the franchise’s profits before putting a number to it.
In addition to the lack of proper consent to her nude scenes in the first film, Corcoran’s claims also indicate she’s been vastly underpaid for her work. Terrifier 2 raked in $15.8 million at the box office against a $250,000 budget, while Terrifier 3 made $90.3 million off a $2 million budget. The upcoming Terrifier 4 would add to that number.
Corcoran is seeking compensation not only for the money she’s owed for starring in Terrifierbut also for having her nude scenes filmed without proper consent. Although a number hasn’t been attached yet, it’s guaranteed to be bigger than her 1% profit agreement because of the other breaks to her contract that happened while filming.
