Prepare to level up your look!
Monsters and ghosts aside, the scariest part of Halloween is having an incomplete costume when Oct. 31 creeps around — and what’s even more frightening is having all the pieces, but you’re unsure how to apply them in order to complete the look.
If you or your kid are dressing up as the popular character Rumi from KPop Demon Huntersfor example, you may be facing that obstacle when it comes to her long, purple — and oh-so iconic — hair braid that beautifully flows down her bright yellow cropped bomber jacket.
Certain Halloween wigs, meanwhile, are one of those accessories that can be among the most fickle to incorporate into a costume for the holiday, whether they appear unrealistic upon ripping open the bag or they don’t sit atop the head properly for a full transformative look.
Hair extensions, too, are another great option for a transformative hair hack. They look natural as they’ve intertwined into real hair, but intricately attaching them can take some next-level coordination!
Fortunately, PEOPLE trusted in professional hairstylists Matt Newmanaka @MattLovesHair, for a step-by-step breakdown on how to properly secure Rumi’s purple wig and braid hair extension, specifically. So whether you’re applying it to yourself or your child for Halloween, you’ll be ready to spend the day in style!
Read on for a complete Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters hair tutorial, according to Newman!
How to Apply Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters‘ Purple Braid Extension

If you’re deciding between Rumi’s purple extension braid or the wig to complete your costume, Newman suggests reaching for the hair extension.
A popular purchase is the $8 extensions on TikTok Shop. Here’s a breakdown on how to secure it.
Step 1: Put hair into a ponytail.
Since the extension isn’t a full wig, the synthetic strands have to be woven into real hair. Newman tells PEOPLE that “the easiest way” to attach the purple piece is by attaching it to a ponytail that’s tied high up on your head.
“Take the pack of braiding hair and open it all the way wide. They usually come folded over, so you open it up,” he explains. “Make a high ponytail, and you split the ponytail in half horizontally, so that you have one half going towards your face and one half going towards your neck.”
“Lay down the braiding hair on top, so that the middle of the braiding hair meets the ponytail, so that you have half going forward, half going backwards,” he says of how to attach the extension to the real hair before starting the braid step.
Step 2: Braid the extension into real hair.
There are two ways to tackle the braiding portion of the application process — one way is easier than the other, so pick your poison. However, thanks to Newman, read on for a simple breakdown of each.
The first option is to “simply braid” the extension into your real hair by grabbing strands of each from top to bottom. “You just mix the real hair, try to tuck the real hair under the purple hair so you see less of it,” he says.
That’s the easiest option; though Newman says the “dragon braid” is a “really popular” method that’s circling social media. However, it’s “a lot more complicated,” he adds.
“The harder way is basically to do four ponytails in horizontal sections, where the ponytail sits in the center of the head, and you separate the braiding hair enough to be four sections,” he explains, adding, “Then you add it over each bit for the dragon braid.”
Step 3: Reinforce the braid.
The weight of the braid could be heavy on the head, especially if it’s attached to a child, so it’s important to reinforce it so that it lasts all night. Instead of sticking in thousands of bobby pins, start with proper elastics for a solid base.
“Use nylon rubber bands, the kind that look like chopped up pantyhose, because those usually have the most give, so they tend to have the least amount of tension (that causes a) headache,” Newman advises.
“Or if that feels too heavy, you can use the teeny tiny little elastics if your kid likes those better,” he adds.
Step 4: Bobby pin, if you must.
To be sure the extension won’t slip out during the night, it’s okay to reach for extra reinforcement. Although, Newman is pretty certain you’ll be fine with a tight elastic alone.
“If you do either of these methods, you shouldn’t need that many bobby pins,” he says, since it’s just a hair extension. “That’s the beauty!” he said of the synthetic piece opposed to wig that can be at times heavy depending.
“So just try to use either nylon or the thin elastics so that your ponytails have some give to it. Therefore, nobody’s getting hair is pulled,” he concludes.
Step 5: Spray the real hair purple.
The last (and fun!) step is to transform your real hair purple! It’s important not to reach for the hair dye (whether it’s a colored spray or gel) before you braid because it makes the real hair harder to style and mend.
“Use the spray or the gel when you’re done to just cover what’s needed,” stresses Newman. “Those products get really sticky, so they’re hard to work with and brush through, so you just want to put them over the outside as a veneer.
How to Apply Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters‘ Purple Braid Wig
Should you reach for Rumi’s purple braided wig instead of the synthetic hair extension, here’s a step-by-step guide to ensuring the piece appears the most natural, according to Newman’s suggestions.
Step 1: Prepare hair for wig cap.
Wig caps are essential for hiding your hair under a wig. They keep the strands flattened and tucked away nicely so that they’re not noticed beneath the costume piece.
“You could do two low pigtails and then you cross them in the back and feed them up the wig,” Newman advises.
Step 2: Apply the wig cap.
Newman made an entire TikTok video on how to prepare your wig before wearing. Placement of the hair under the wig is crucial.
“I definitely recommend putting a wig cap on,” he stresses. “Try to focus the bulk of the hair you’re covering up at a low bun at the nape of the neck, because that is being covered by the braid anyways.”
He continues: “You want to get the front flatter because that’s the part that can look wonky with the braid wig because there’s no hair covering the hairline. So put the bulk of the hair you’re covering at the back of the wig.”
Step 3: Secure the wig.
Similar to the hair extension, the wig may need extra reinforcement to ensure it stays in place all night. The difference between the synthetic strands, however, is that the wig may be heavier, so bobby pins may really come in handy.
“A bobby pin behind each ear should do good, one bobby pin behind each ear,” he shares. “The bobby pin in the back should be under the wig cap and the top should be over the wig and pushed under, so that hair, wig cap and wig are all clipped together in the bobby pin.”
Step 4: Extra reinforcement, if needed.
Newman emphasizes the importance of being “intentional” with your one bobby pin, so you “don’t have a million” sticking out of your head. However, if your wig has straps inside of it, take advantage!
“You can look at the nape of the neck on the inside of the wig, there might be adjustable straps, so you can adjust those to make it tighter or looser if the wig comes with that,” he shares.
Otherwise, he concludes, “If it’s secure, it’s secure!”
