Sailor Moon Crystal Returns to Netflix After Streaming Exit

Anime’s global boom in popularity hasn’t slowed down one bit, with historic performances at the US box office and on streaming charts establishing the medium as a bona fide mainstream form of entertainment. As a result, the top streaming services in the world have been increasing their efforts to bring more of anime’s top titles into their selections.

Netflixin particular, has been a front-runner in this trend, acquiring exclusive rights to a number of shows each season while also bringing classics to their service. Just this past week, in a move that flew largely under the radar, Netflix secured one of 2014’s top series, Sailor Moon Crystal.

As more and more new viewers are introduced to the medium of anime through modern smash-hit titles, it’s typically the classics in the industry that eventually fully transform them into anime fans. Netflix scored big this past week, making 2014’s Sailor Moon Crystal available to stream.

Based on the iconic manga series by Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Moon Crystal is meant to function as a more faithful adaptation of the original work. The ’90s anime, while likely the most popular Sailor Moon property, took liberties with its source material, causing Toei Animation to revisit the series in 2014.

All three seasons are available on Netflix in both English and their original Japanese audio. Although the series did not bring Sailor Moon‘s story to a close, its companion films that ultimately did are also available on Netflix. Fans of the original anime series are somewhat mixed on Sailor Moon Crystalalthough it’s the most faithful adaptation to date.

Earlier this year, Netflix reported that an estimated 50% of its subscribers watch anime regularly, an incredibly impressive figure considering the global reach of the streaming service. The industry has seemingly taken note of that number as well, as other services like Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime continue to battle over the most popular anime series.

Crunchyroll, a service dedicated entirely to anime, is still the name to beat for most companies, although if Netflix continues to score major properties like Sailor Moonit will certainly put up a good fight. Sailor Moon Crystal is now streaming on Netflix in its entirety, and fans won’t want to miss out on the series as its creator intended it.
