EXCLUSIVE: Two more familiar faces from Season 1 of Apple’s popular comedy-drama crime series Bad Monkey are set to return for Season 2. One of the Season 1 leads, Natalie Martinez, will once again be a series regular, reprising her role as Rosa, while Season 1 recurring guest star Charlotte Lawrence, who played rebellious teen Caitlin, has been promoted to a series regular for the new season.
They join two other returning Season 1 cast members, series’ star and executive producer Vince Vaughn as Miami detective-turned-health inspector Andrew Yancy as well as John Ortiz, who also has been upped from recurring to series regular. He plays Rogelio, a police detective and Yancy’s best friend.
Besides Vaughn, whose return was confirmed at the time of the Season 2 renewal, Ortiz was the only cast member whose return was set up in the Season 1 finale, which ended with Yancy and Rogelio taking on a new case.
There was no obvious path laid out for others to return. For instance, in the closer, Rosa (Martinez) decided to leave her job as a medical examiner and broke off her romantic relationship with Yancy. Caitlin (Lawrence) was part of the Season 1 case as the daughter and step daughter, respectively, of the murderous couple Nick (Rob Delaney) and Eve (Meredith Hagner) who both died in the finale.
Developed and executive produced by Bill Lawrence, who serves as showrunner, the series will tell a new original story in Season 2 after Season 1 was based on Carl Hiaasen’s bestselling novel Bad Monkey.
In addition to the quartet of returning stars, Vaughn, Martinez, Ortiz and Lawrence (who is Bill Lawrence’s daughter), Season 2 of Bad Monkey will feature new cast members John Malkovich, Yvonne Strahovski, Zavior Phillips and Nate Jackson.
“Anybody that’s still alive, that people responded to, we’re going to figure out a way that they exist in our world — or at least cruise through,” Lawrence told Deadline in a Season 1 final postmortem interview about the possibility of characters returning next season.
From Warner Bros. Television, Bad Monkey is executive produced by Lawrence through his Doozer Productions, the company’s Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer as well as Matt Tarses, Vaughn and Season 2 head writer Adam Sztykiel.
The series is moving production from Florida to California for Season 2 with a $20 million tax credit.

Martinez will next be seen opposite Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in Apple TV’s Brothers comedy series loosely inspired by McConaughey and Harrelson’s real-life longtime friendship. She is repped by UTA, Atlas Artists and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
Bad Monkey marked the acting debut of Lawrence, a model and singer-songwriter. Her debut album Somewhere was released on June 27, followed by a Somewhere Tour in North America. She is repped by CAA, Front Row Management, Mark Music & Media Law.
