The Shining‘s IMAX release is now confirmed as the Stanley Kubrick film prepares for another run in theaters. First hitting the big screen in 1980, the Stephen King adaptation stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd, chronicling one father’s descent into madness as he looks after a haunted hotel with his family.
IMAX now shares a new trailer, revealing that The Shining will play in the format for the first time starting December 12. The trailer features a number of memorable moments from the movie, including Nicholson’s iconic “Here’s Johnny!” line. Check it out below:
Thought The Shining continues to get occasional play in theaters, it has never before been presented in IMAX, which features either a 1.43:1 or 1.90:1 ratio, depending on the theater and specific IMAX format. Most modern IMAX theaters play movies in the 1.90:1 ratioand the trailer provides a taste of what the Kubrick film will look like in this new format.
The film now stands as one of Kubrick’s most beloved movies, but it was not received this way upon release, with critics taking issue with the movie’s pacing and runtime. Marking Kubrick’s follow-up Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining wasn’t a box office hit, grossing just $48 million worldwide. The movie even earned Kubrick a Razzie nomination.
Eventually, though, The Shining became a widely celebrated entry in the director’s filmographywith its ambiguity, depiction of the Overlook Hotel, and Nicholson’s bold performance winning audiences over. Still, one audience member who was not pleased was King himself, with the author making no secret of his distaste for Kubrick’s changes to his source material.
Kubrick’s 1980 movie may now be considered a horror classic, but the film is still controversial in some respects. Kubrick’s on-set treatment of Duvall, who passed away last year at the age of 75, continues to be a talking pointwith the actress said to have been pushed to a point of extreme physical and emotional exhaustion.
The world of The Shining returned in 2019 with the release of Doctor Sleep from filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Despite strong reviews, the film wasn’t a big hit in theaters, but, like its predecessor, love for the sequel has grown over time. Of the sequel, King told EW: “Everything that I ever disliked about the Kubrick version of The Shining is redeemed for once.”
It’s not clear how long The Shining will play in IMAX for, but it could end up being a one-day event in many theaters. For those looking to see Kubrick’s film in this format, securing tickets may be a competitive endeavor. Tickets aren’t yet on sale for the experience, but news in that regard will likely arrive closer to release.
