A parent-to-be shared that their wife wanted to give their twins names that would have been inappropriate but has now thankfully decided to consider other names instead
A parent-to-be has let out a sigh of relief after their partner has finally had second thoughts about the controversial names she was fixed on for their twins.
Expecting parents are often caught in the whirlwind of naming their soon-to-arrive bundles of joy, striving to pick a moniker that grows well with their child into adulthood. Some parents yearn for distinctive or rare baby names to ensure their children stand out, but it’s a fine line to walk, as kids bearing unconventional names might face teasing at school or even from relatives.
On Reddit, user RopePsychological567 voiced relief when his wife reconsidered naming their unborn twins Romeo and Juliet – owing to her Shakespeare obsession. Things took a turn after she watched the 1968 film adaptation with a friend and it dawned on her how odd it would be to name siblings after a tragic romantic duo.
In a grateful online message, RopePsychological567 posted: “Thanks for all the comments and name suggestions. I didn’t want to speak badly about my wife, but yes, I’m well aware of how deranged it is to name a pair of siblings after a fictional couple, and I was too much of a coward to bring up the incest thing in my original post.”
The user shared that their wife’s obsession with the names Romeo and Juliet began after she re-read the play and suggested they name their twins after the tragic lovers. He said: “I was taken back and told her we’d sleep on it, but the following day, it was all she’d talk about, and she was so happy I didn’t have the heart to talk her out of it.”
Sadly, as the weeks passed, the expectant mum became increasingly fixated on the idea. When the user finally put their foot down, refusing to name their children “after such a famous couple under any circumstances”, she was devastated.
The user continued: “Her best friend came over after work, and I’m not exactly sure what happened, but I know they watched the 1968 movie version of Romeo and Juliet together, which I’ve been told has a sex scene. I think that snapped some sense into my wife. Her friend left a few hours ago, and my wife’s been quiet, but she asked if we could look over the names I’d picked out again.
“Thanks again for all the comments; I think we both needed reality slapped into us, her from her delusion and me from my apparent lack of common sense. She’s still dead set on something Shakespeare/theatre-related and somewhat matching, but now that her head is clearer, I hope we can pick something better.”
The Reddit thread, posted on March 12, has erupted with attention, securing 3,000 upvotes and a flood of over 3,000 comments. One Reddit user proposed: “I think Sebastian and Viola would be so fun! And if she’s a fan of Amanda Bynes – that’s her character’s name and her twin’s name from She’s the Man!”.
Another chimed in: “Don’t name siblings after lovers… please… I highly agree with the other poster who suggested Viola and Sebastian – both solid names, Shakespearean twins, absolutely wonderful play. If your wife doesn’t like Viola, maybe alter to Violet?” Meanwhile, a third added their two cents: “There are so many beautiful female Shakespearean names to choose from… Miranda, Portia, Jessica, Regan to name a few.”
