NewType Magazine, owned by the Kadokawa Group, recently announced on their X account the results of the NewType Anime Awards. This award selects the best anime among the titles premiered from July 2024 to April 2025. While the number of votes has not been disclosed, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines overtook first place as Anime of the Year at the NewType Awards. Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines thus becomes the successor to Frieren: Beyond Journey’s Endwhich won the previous voting in 2024. The staff behind the anime, A-1 Pictures, also won the title of Best Animation Studio.

Furthermore, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroinesprotagonist Kazuhiko Nukumizu overtook voters’ favor, becoming the Best Male Character of the Year. Machine is one of the best romantic comedies of 2024, subverting the genre by focusing on exploring what happens after a failed confession. That’s why it’s no surprise that it has resonated so much with Japanese viewers.

In contrast, Solo Leveling came in fourth place among NewType voters in Japan, being beaten by the latest addition to the Gundam franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXand the fan-favorite court palace drama, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. The poll results also show well-known series like Dandadan and ReZero Season 3as well as underrated 2025 anime like Apocalypse Hotel.

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines‘ anime adaptation had a winning formula, with stunning animation and a cast of fascinatingly chaotic characters, each with their own struggles and personal growth. The anime is also based on a light novel, whose popularity skyrocketed after the broadcast of the anime. Between November 2024 and May 2025, Machine‘s light novel sold over 100,000 copies.

Machine became the 4th best-selling light novel of the year, only behind established franchises like The Apothecary Diaries, Classroom of the Eliteand That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
