Duffer Brothers Confirm Vecna Has New Powers In Stranger Things Season 5

Ahead of Stranger Things season 5’s long-awaited premiere on Netflix on November 26, the Duffer brothers have confirmed that Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) will be returning with some horrifying changes to his powers. Although the series retroactively revealed he had a long-standing presence in Hawkins and the show itself, Vecna was introduced in Stranger Things season 4 as the Upside Down’s new villain terrorizing Hawkins.

By Stranger Things season 4’s ending, it was revealed that Vecna was actually Henry Creel, aka Number One, the first of the superpowered children being experimented on at Hawkins Lab by Dr. Brenner. After Henry murdered the other children at the lab, a young Eleven used her powers to banish him to the Upside Down, where he gradually transformed into the villainous Vecna, eventually leading him to destroy and take over Hawkins in the season 4 finale.

In a recent interview with EmpireRoss and Matt Duffer confirmed that Stranger Things season 5 will include new powers for Vecna, who will return very different from how we last saw him in season 4. According to Matt Duffer, he’s not only stronger than before, but Vecna’s increasingly violent powers have transformed to be effective in both the Upside Down and Hawkins’ real world:

“We’ve been calling him Vecna 2.0, because he’s changed. Those changes include powers that are effective in the real world of Hawkins, no longer tethered to the Upside Down. He’s stronger and scarier than ever, with new real-world abilities. In Season 4, he was deadly because he could infiltrate your mind and manipulate you in that manner. Now he can kick your ass in truly violent ways, like Freddy on steroids.”

As horrifying as Vecna was back in season 4, it’s even more concerning that he’ll be returning to face our heroes in Hawkins again with even more damaging powers. Even Vecna’s been healing from his confrontation with the Hawkins gang back in season 4, he’s been working to change his existing abilities and develop new ones to maximize his control, terror, and destruction in the real world, extending his reach far beyond his mindscape and the Upside Down.

Vecna could already invade minds, cause hallucinations, control the Upside Down’s hive mind, create portals, use telekinesis (including the ability to break limbs and gouge eyes of people in the real world from the Upside Down), and regenerate himself to a certain degree. If the Duffers are now suggesting he’s twice as powerful as he was back in season 4, with new real-world powers, the death count among Stranger Things‘ characters looks likely to skyrocket in season 5.

However, Vecna isn’t the only one with new powers. Teaser images and Stranger Things season 5’s trailers have revealed that Eleven has upgraded her powers of levitation to apply to what appears to be flying. The trailer includes a brief look at Eleven either having the power to fly or an elevated jumping ability as she launches herself over a bus, which should give Hawkins another major advantage in their final stand against Vecna.
