An overshadowed hit from this summer featuring a roster of stellar Hollywood talent is soon coming to streaming. Materialistsstarring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, grossed $104 million at the worldwide box office this year and is the second directorial feature from fan-favorite writer-director Celine Song.
Materialists revolves around Johnson’s Manhattan matchmaker Lucy, who has vowed not to date casually and prioritize money after financial strain ended her relationship with John (Evans). While she is at one of her wealthy clients’ weddings, Lucy hits it off with the groom’s brother, extremely wealthy financier Harry (Pascal), who is everything she purportedly wants — but true love gets in the way.
Following its VOD release, A24 has announced that Materialists will be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max from November 7. While the romantic comedy drama’s record-breaking gross tells us that a lot of people saw it in June, streaming will still make it more accessible, as it won’t cost any extra money for HBO Max subscribers.
Materialists is Celine Song’s highest-grossing movie to date, after her 2023 hit Past Liveswhich earned Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay nominations at the Oscars. While Materialists is very unlikely to follow in Past Lives’ footsteps and make the list of 2026 Oscar nominees, its commercial success will keep doors open for Song in the future.
The rom-com is also the third A24 movie to pass $100 million at the worldwide box office, and as the studio also produced Past LivesSong will likely continue to work with them. The movie has also been generally critically successful; Materialists’ reviews praised its examination of how capitalism affects modern romantic relationships and for resolving a frankly clichéd love triangle in a satisfying way.
Materialists’ stars are also very busy: Pascal is arguably the most in-demand actor in Hollywood, while Johnson is set to star in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best novel. Evans doesn’t have any confirmed upcoming projects, but both he and Pascal had multiple major movies come out this year, covering Fantastic Four, Eddington, Honey Don’tand Sacrifice.
As these stars continue to deliver groundbreaking work, people hopefully won’t forget about their truly great rom-com and will revisit it on HBO. After materialists’ successful box office run, a streaming release will allow it to further cement its place as an unconventional modern entry into the genre, illustrating how Song will continue to shape this space of storytelling.
