As the $4.5 billion franchise looks to slowly be making progress in coming back, Bill Nighy is ready to return as Davy Jones for Pirates of the Caribbean. Introduced in the 2006 sequel, Dead Man’s ChestNighy played the infamous pirate sailor-turned-supernatural-entity for two installments, acting as the primary antagonist as he hunted down Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow in order to close a deal they made that would make Sparrow part of the Flying Dutchman‘s otherworldly crew.
Development on a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has gone through a variety of iterations since 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Talesranging from a spinoff headed by Margot Robbie to a proper continuation focused on Depp’s character. The latter has proven the trickier to get off the ground amid the star’s infamous legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, although producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently indicated the next mainline film will be something of a soft reboot, featuring both new and familiar faces, leaving the door open for more Jack Sparrow.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for the new Harlan Coben series LazarusNighy was asked about the possibility of reprising Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The Oscar-nominated star affirmed he “would love to go back” and bring his iconic character to life, revealing there were even once talks to have him continue in the series:
I did think that there might be (more). It was mentioned at one point, in fact, when one of the producers said to me, “How would you like to come back? How would you like to come back without the tentacles?” And I said, “Well, yeah, that would be great.”
Nighy went on to reflect on the brief appearance At World’s End‘s flashback sequence, in which he got to be “the Scottish pirate that I used to be before I became a squid“. He went on to praise the Pirates of the Caribbean‘s wardrobe and makeup department for having “really pulled out all the stops“, nor he felt he was “always the sad guy in computer pajamas” for Davy Jones’ motion capture appearance:
They really went to town, and they made me the greatest beard and the greatest wig and the greatest costume. It was very satisfying for a while.
For Nighy to return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the next film would need to focus on at least Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner in some capacity. Having swapped places with Jones by stabbing his cursed heart in the At World’s End climax, the most recent movie, Dead Men Tell No Talessaw Will return to Elizabeth after being freed from the Flying Dutchman‘s curse. However, the post-credits scene indicated that Jones may not only still be alive, but back in his octopus-like form.
While fans of the star are still adamantly campaigning for his return, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 making the story about Davy Jones coming for revenge on Will and his family could serve as a smoother way to move beyond Depp’s Jack Sparrow. Not only could it open the door for other characters to return, but it would also give Will and Elizabeth a more fitting and focused send-off that introduces potential story arcs for other new characters.
Thankfully for Bruckheimer, Bloom has frequently expressed his interest in returning for the next one Pirates of the Caribbeanand with Nighy also now open to it, he may very well be able to work with his writers to gain more momentum on the film. Or, should Robbie’s spinoff have more ties to the mainline films than expected, Jones could even find his way to terrorizing a new corner of the open seas.
