Warning! This review contains SPOILERS for Gen V season 2, episode 8.Gen V season 2 ends with one of its best episodes, setting up what should be an explosive final run for The Boys in season 5. Ever since Starlight appeared in the first episode of season 2, I knew Gen V was going to set up something crucial for The Boysfinal season. After all, the show has already done that before.
In season 1, Gen V set up the virus that killed Supes for The Boys to explore. Now, the series sets up a team that could help Hughie and his friends stop Homelander’s reign of terror. There are two steps to analyzing Gen V season 2’s finale. First, the series had to come up with a satisfying ending to the Godolkin/Cipher storyline.
In that regard, the end result was more positive than negative, although I couldn’t help but be disappointed that we’re not getting more of Ethan Slater’s Thomas Godolkin in The Boys season 5. Thankfully, that could be remedied by the character being part of future seasons of The Boys‘ spinoff prequel, Vought Risingwith Soldier Boy and Stormfront.
The second aspect of the finale is how it sets up The Boys season 5 and a continuation for these characters. To that end, the show came up with a strong hook to get audiences to tune in next year. Not that the flagship series hadn’t done that by itself, but it seems a major Gen V and The Boys crossover is coming.
Thomas Godolkin Is Dead — Gen V Kills Its Most Powerful Villain
Going into the Gen V season 2 finale, I never expected Godolkin to die. After the season-long arc that led to Cipher being revealed as Godolkin and Marie healing his heavily injured body, I was sure the villain would return in a major role in The Boys season 5.
On top of that, Slater delivered a magnetic performance in the final couple of episodes. Godolkin seemed truly despicable and had the power to follow through on his haunting ideas. As such, it’s disappointing that the character is killed by Marie in the finale. I’ll miss Slater’s thrilling performance in the role.
While I’m sad there will be no more from Godolkin, I’m happy the heroes won.
And yet, in terms of the show itself, Godolkin’s death works. After all, Marie going at it alone and trying to carry the “burden” of her immense power by herself is what led to the villain tricking her and killing several students. In the finale, she learns to accept help from her friends, showing growth.
Said help could not come in a while The Boys-appropriate manner, as the “Trojan” title of the episode refers to Marie’s friends hiding in a Supe’s butt to come out and surprise Godolkin for a shocking final fight. Sean Patrick Thomas’ Polarity deserves a mention for how the character grew into the spotlight in season 2.
With Andre gone, his father became the hero Marie and her friends needed to take down Godolkin. It was satisfying seeing Polarity mess with the villain’s powers, as was seeing Marie explode Godolkin after he controlled her. While I’m sad there will be no more from Godolkin, the heroes needed a big win.
Gen V’s Main Characters Should Play A Major Role In The Boys Season 5
While Gen V season 1 ended by setting up the virus storyline for The Boysthe series also had an ending that was specific to the show, with Marie and her friends trapped in Elmira. However, Gen V season 2’s finale does not make a clear differentiation between what season 3 and The Boys season 5 could explore.
They are now firmly part of the rebellion against Homelander, with Marie’s powers growing so much that she could possibly take on Antony Starr’s villain and win.
I was thrilled to see the team, complete with Marie’s sister, Annabeth, meeting Starlight and A-Train at the end. They are now firmly part of the rebellion against Homelander, with Marie’s powers growing so much that she could possibly take on Antony Starr’s villain and win. She should be the hero to turn the tide in The Boys season 5.
Gen V has done a great job of connecting organically to The Boyselevating the overall franchise along with it. It has all been leading to an explosive conclusion, as Marie’s team is at its strongest and most united it has ever been. It’s a near-perfect finale for season 2, and I can’t wait for it The Boys season 5.
