A woman who goes by the name of ‘Driver Ms May’ online has shared a number of cost-effective household hacks to help keep your car in tip-top condition – including using one everyday essential
A motoring guru has shared some of her best budget-friendly tricks for keeping your car in pristine condition.
Known as ‘Driver Ms May’ to her Instagram followers, the car buff has offered her insight on the many ordinary domestic products that can help perform miracles on typical car troubles. In one of her viral videos, watched by more than 2.2 million viewers, she brandishes a tube of toothpaste and claims it can sort out scratches. She slathers it onto a vehicle’s surface, buffs it with a towel for a few seconds and marvels as the blemishes disappear. The car appears to have returned to its shining former glory.
Toothpaste isn’t just for polishing smiles – according to May – it can also be used in various ways for your car. In a video on her Instagram, she poses the question: “Why do one billion experienced drivers keep toothpaste in their cars? Because toothpaste has three functions – it is very practical.”
She then details how the bathroom staple, which can be picked up for around £1 from your local supermarket, can be used on rainy days. She can be seen smearing it on wing mirrors, and claims it can stop water droplets forming and distorting the vision. And for the grand finale, she dabs a bit on old wiper blades, and claims it will clear your windshield again like new.

May also claims other humble household items can come to your car’s rescue. Her essential tricks, recently shared to her 3.2 million enthusiastic followers, include using a halved potato to stop water droplets on wing mirrors during rainy spells. She explained: “When driving in the rain, it is very easy to get water droplets on the rear view mirror. In fact, it (the car) is most afraid of potatoes. We just need to wipe potatoes on the rear view mirror a few times. There will be no more water droplets.”
In the footage, she wipes a halved potato over the wing mirror, then demonstrates its effectiveness by throwing water at it. The water no longer sticks to the mirror and droplets don’t form. May also highlighted that, over time, a car’s headlights can turn a dingy black and yellow. To counteract this, she used a trusty bottle of cola and beer.
She slathered the fizzy beverage over them, then followed up with a beer soak before scrubbing away with a towel. For her final tip in her car-hack roundup, May added: “In addition, when we open and close the car door, the car door has a creaking sound. It is most afraid of soap – let’s put the soap on the limiter and wipe it back and forth a few times. The abnormal sound will disappear.”
Some viewers were skeptical about May’s advice. One chimed in: “The last one makes me uncomfortable for no reason.” While another said: “Not gonna waste beer for some headlights. Another chipped in with: “We are just wasting food and products,” and someone else pointed out: “White paste on white car, obvious. Try it on a black car?”
While some were dubious and hesitant to try the hacks for themselves, many were thankful for her distinctive advice. A follower commented: “Awesome.”
Another penned: “I don’t have a car but this is so satisfying that I followed.” And another said: “Thanks May, it was useful.” Meanwhile, one viewer quipped: “So toothpaste can clean car scratches but not my teeth.”
It’s important to know you’re taking risks if you clean your car in a way that isn’t advised, as outcomes may vary. Consult your manual or visit a local garage before attempting the DIY method to avoid potential damage to your car.
