Tom Ford had a big show during Paris Fashion Week, debuting the collection of his new designer Haider Ackermann. Three hours before the show, the backstage chaos was at its peak. Models sat in hair and makeup for final touch-ups. Some were getting their eyebrows bleached, others were getting their hair molded, and many were getting pretty pastel eye shadow on their lids. “We need to intensify the eye,” said Lucy Bridge, the key backstage makeup artist who walked around telling the team after a show run-through.
For this new era of Tom Ford, the smoky eye was out and the pastel eye was in. Soft yellow, blue, and purple eye shadow stood out on the makeup board backstage where all of the looks were being shown. Next to the shadows I saw a deep red lip, not your normal red, but a glossy red that leaves pearly white teeth slightly stained. They were meant to make the lips appear seductive, a theme for the collection. The bright pantsuits and cutout garments on the runway weren’t seductive enough — Ackermann wanted the glam to be just as sultry.
Models wore Tom Ford runway lip color in Scarlet Rouge, a cool, bright red, topped with Tom Ford’s gloss luxe in Disclosureanother standout red. The gloss was added exactly five minutes before showtime so it could have a glassy look on the runway. “Kissable” lips was the goal. Our fashion critic, Cathy Horyn, said the lips looked “as if Dracula gave them a smooch,” so the team got their point across being kissable. The bright lips were contrasted by super-sculpted skin using Tom Ford’s blurring foundation. For the last alluring beauty moment, models wore a Tom Ford scent down the runway, Oud Wooda fragrance with notes of pink pepper and amber. It has a bit of spice to it, but it’s also sexy. I’d wear this for date night was the first thing I said when I smelled it. Could the audience smell the models at all? I’m sure they couldn’t. But for a show that wants to seduce, all senses must be touched on, so why not douse the models in a desirable scent?
