Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Revives Mahito in Shock Cliffhanger

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has been consistently unveiling the lasting effects of Gege Akutami’s original story and its characters. This extends beyond focusing on the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki, too, as the series keeps offering teasing glimpses of returning characters. The latest to make the rounds is an ominous Mahito cameo, although its meaning is not yet understood.

Nor of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter #7, there was one passing glimpse of Mahito just as Tsurugi Okkotsu woke up in his hospital bed. Fresh off a confrontation with Masaki Takeda, whose possible flashback of Yuji Itadori helped him reckon with the fear of facing a superior opponent, Tsurugi appears to have interacted with the iconic Jujutsu Kaisen cursed spirit.

After the events of Maru’s deadly fight with Masaki Takeda, with Tsurugi barely surviving his confrontation with the Simurian’s ensuing rampage, Jujutsu Kaisen villain Mahito appears to him in a dream. The character speaks in a single-panel cameo, before Tsurugi wakes up. Given the manga’s tendency to invoke legacy characters, it’ll be interesting to see where this leads.

Damn. So it’s not him after all?

It’s difficult to interpret exactly what Mahito’s appearance means in chapter #7. While Yuji’s appearance in chapter #6 was arguably more mysterious, with his scar being the major identifying factor, Mahito’s visage was clearly unmistakable thanks to a recognizable face, hair, and crude stitches on his face and neck. Given the momentary tease, it’s not likely his only appearance.

Still, with the series having progressed 68 years into a future world where Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu are embroiled in a possible future conflict with aliens, it’s fascinating to see old threats re-emerge. Mahito got a fitting ending in Jujutsu Kaisen, scorning Sukuna for changing his ways while Mahito remained the same despicable villain. But is he getting another chance?

While Mahito only appeared for one panel, there are multiple paths the story could take to incorporate him into Jujutsu Kaisen Modulate beyond chapter #7. He could be reincarnated, living within Tsurugi and preying on his insecurities, namely, Tsurugi’s ambitions to be like his grandmother, Maki Zenin, and prove his strength. But other angles add fascinating layers to this.

Mahito has previously described himself as the manifestation of humanity’s hatred and discord, and it’s clear this isn’t going away anytime soon. It was always going to be a possibility for Mahito to return, although Tsurugi is seemingly doing his best to prevent such discord, including acts of war and provocation from the Simurians.

Directly before this panel, Maru’s brother, Cross, is seen mimicking the Simurian, adopting his hairstyle and even covering his third eye in an identical manner. If Mahito is inside Tsurugi, he could even be commenting on Cross’s poor disguise (which is recognized by Yuka immediately). But there’s one last important factor to Mahito’s Jujutsu Kaisen return.

Yuji’s flashback appearance in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo implies, but does not yet prove, that the two could cross paths again. Given his fiery claim to kill Mahito every time he reincarnates in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter #132, fans are already hyping up another fight. However, this remains yet to be proven in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, with each character only getting one glimpse.
