Brad Pitt and Netflix are officially teaming up to adapt a sci-fi horror series based on a 30-year-old, award-winning series of comics. There are plenty of sci-fi TV shows on streaming services that have grown popular, with Netflix housing a number of them. This includes cultural phenomena like Stranger Thingsto smaller series like 3 Body Problem.
Now, Variety reports that Pitt’s production company, Plan B Productions, is teaming up with Netflix to adapt the graphic novel series Black Hole by Charles Burns. The sci-fi horror TV series has been given a direct-to-series order. Plan B will executive produce, while New Regency and Netflix will co-produce. Jane Schoenbrun is attached as showrunner and to direct the series.
According to an official logline, Black Hole focuses on the town of Roosevelt, where anyone who has sex too young contracts a virus that turns them into a monster. The protagonist, Chris, a high school senior, catches said virus, forcing her to become an outcast in the woods surrounding the town — all while a serial killer hunts down those infected.
In addition to involvement from Pitt’s company and Schoenbrun, Burns will serve as an executive producer of the series. Other executive producers include Erin Levy, alongside Laura Delahaye, Natalie Lehmann, Yariv Milchan, and Arnon Milchan for New Regency. The team behind Black Hole indicate a promising start to the series’ long-term development, alongside Netflix’s dedication to the show.
Netflix isn’t the first to try bringing Black Hole onscreen. Attempts to adapt the sci-fi graphic novel have been ongoing since 2006, when Alexandre Aja was attached to direct a movie adaptation written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery. Most recently, in 2018, New Regency and Plan B were attached to a potential film adaptation from Dope director Rick Famuyiwa.
Schoenbrun is best known for their A24 psychological horror movie I Saw the TV Glowand the 2021 coming-of-age horror film We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. Both movies have been nominated for several awards, tapping into a form of terror that’s also found in Burns’ graphic novel. Their involvement is a promising look into how the series develops.
While Black Hole isn’t going to be a Stranger Things season 5 type of sci-fi horror series, the graphic novel has its own share of unique qualities that will help it stand out within Netflix‘s catalog. With Pitt‘s production company and Schoenbrun involved, the series has the potential to be a standout release for the streaming service.
