Nobody Wants This wants pop-girl fall to last forever. The second season of the Emmy-nominated Netflix rom-com, starring Kristen Bell as a goy named Joanne in love with a rabbi named Noah played by Adam Brody, premieres 16 new songs by Kacey Musgraves, Role Model, and more on its soundtrack. One of those new songs is “In the Dark,” from Selena Gomez, who had her own rom-com this year marrying music producer Benny Blanco. Her music bookends the season, starting in the premiere with “Sunset Blvd,” from the album she and Blanco released this year. “In the Dark” starts off the final episode of the season. It’s an upbeat dance track that has Gomez promising, “I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you of all you are.” The song feels like a throwback to the 2010s, when dark, electronica pop dominated the airwaves. Gomez herself acknowledged the vintage of the new song on Instagramwhen she captioned her post about the track, “This is just a little nostalgia droplet and I hope you love it.”
In the show, the song scores Joanne’s sister Morgan’s (Justine Lupe) engagement party, through which Joanne and Noah are struggling after getting into a fight. As they decide to fake their way through the party as a happy couple, Joanne grabs Noah’s hand, and the sweet tones of Gomez blare through the speakers. Will this be the next “Running Up That Hill,” another song used in a Netflix show to catapult it to the top ten?
