Titus Welliver’s Transformation In The Westies Image: A New Era Post-Bosch

Titus Welliver’s future in the Bosch franchise may currently be unknown, but he looks to have found a transformative replacement in a new image from The Westies. The MGM+ series marks Welliver’s first major TV role in the wake of Bosch: Legacy‘s surprise cancellation, although he did reprise the role in a guest capacity for its critically acclaimed spinoff, Ballard.

Created by Godfather of Harlem own Chris Brancato and Michael Panes, The Westies is an ’80s-set crime drama centering on Eamon Sweeney, the charismatic-yet-ruthless leader of the titular criminal family, and Glenn Keenan, an NYPD officer with a history growing up with the Westies. As a war begins to brew between the Westies and the Five Families of the Italian mafia, as well as internally, Keenan becomes torn between being true to the law and assisting the FBI in their investigation, and his family ties.

Welliver is set to co-lead the Westies cast as Keenan, while Oscar winner JK Simmons is set to star as Sweeney, marking his first dramatic live-action TV role since Apple TV’s Defending Jacob. The pair is further joined in the show by Back in Action‘s Tom Brittney, Ozark‘s Jessica Frances Dukes, Stanley Morgan and Descendant‘s Sarah Bolger, among others.

With filming still underway on the series, Welliver took to his Instagram to share the first glimpse of The Westies. The set photo sees Welliver talking with director Adam Kane, complete in his character’s costume of a tattered Army jacket, ’70s-era mustache, longer hair and aviator sunglasses, a far cry from his cleaner-shaven appearance in the Bosch universe. Check out his post below:

Although Welliver is one of the most acclaimed character actors in Hollywood, having played everyone from the Man in Black in Lost to Lex Luthor in HBO Max’s Titansit’s hard to deny that his 10-season tenure as Michael Connelly’s Hieronymus Bosch in the self-titled series. The star himself has frequently expressed feeling a continued connection between himself and the iconic detective, which also further made the show’s cancellation a disappointment.

That being said, before he became Bosch, and even in roles apart from the Prime Video series, Welliver frequently donned a variety of looks for his other characters, with one of the more notable being his era-accurate turn as Silas in Deadwood. The first look at his character in The Westiesthough, specifically sees him getting to sport a very prominent mustache for the first time in a long while, harking back to the likes of his turns in The X-Files and Gone Baby Gone.

Beyond the facial hair, Welliver’s messier look The Westies set photo also points to a much different type of character for the star to sink his teeth into. His being a police officer may initially draw comparisons to Harry Bosch, but while Connelly’s LAPD detective-turned-private investigator may have held a gray-line approach to his morals, he still was generally on the right side of things, which his clean appearance exemplified.

For Keenan in The Westieshis more relaxed appearance speaks volumes to his more compromised, and potentially darker, moral compass. Given the show will also be coming to MGM+ in 2026, around the same time as the Bosch prequel, Start of Watchit will allow fans of the mystery franchise to see the range Welliver has in his performance.
