Warning! This article contains major spoilers for Gen V season 2, episode 7.The Boys and Gen V co-creator Eric Kripke revealed his reaction to fans correctly guessing the show’s major Dean Cipher twist. In Gen V season 2, episode 7, “Hell Week,” Marie (Jaz Sinclair) uses her newly discovered abilities to heal the fleshy, scarred body trapped by Dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater), rationalizing her decision using the age-old wisdom of “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Unfortunately, in the episode, just as Polarity (Sean Patrick Thomas) prepares to kill Cipher, Marie finishes her healing, revealing the body’s identity to be none other than Dr. Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater). He’s the one with the controlling powers, the one who pioneered the deadly Odessa project seen in Gen V season 2’s first scene. Cipher was merely a vessel.
In an interview with TheWrapKripke revealed the creative masterminds behind that game-changing twist, and how it made him feel when some viewers figured out the truth before the penultimate episode’s premiere. “I’m well aware that a lot of the fans online have been picking apart the clues and got on the right scent. They’re very, very smart, and I give them credit. In the same breath, I’m irritated, they figured it out,” Kripke said.
“(The twist) primarily came from (showrunner) Michele (Fazekas) and Tom Schnauz, her executive producer. (It was) just a super cool twist (and) just a really fun notion that this whole time you think Hamish (Linklater) is the bad guy, and then it turns out that the bad guy is actually Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater), which is the first person you saw the whole season and just bringing it all back to just the guy who founded the place in the first place — that was really fun,” Kripke continued.
“It was just a blast watching Hamish play seven episodes of the creepiest villain, and then one episode of like the biggest chucklehead you’ve ever seen. The switch is so incredible, and he’s such a good actor. It was so fun to watch. And Ethan does a great job as Godolkin.”
Despite Kripke’s light-hearted frustration, the show went to great lengths to drop hints about Cipher’s and Godolkin’s true identities from the start of the season, including Marie’s inability to detect Cipher’s powers, his unappealing diet, and more.
During a separate interview, Gen V showrunner Michele Fazekas shared that she, too, was worried fans would unravel the twist beforehand, but believed it would have been hard for viewers to guess that Godolkin was personally controlling Cipher’s actions. There were hints that something was wrong with Cipher, but how likely was it that the two were so closely connected?
“We’re laying out little hints that, if you look back, you’ll be able to see it. Even the fact that — why does this guy just drink gross shakes with chicken and stuff in it? It’s because he doesn’t taste anything. He doesn’t care about this body. He’s just trying to keep it going to get to the end goal,” Fazekas explained.
“We were worried that everyone’s going to guess that. I think some people will guess that. I don’t know if it’s guessable that they are actually the same person, that this guy is just some guy. He is basically just a body that (Godolkin’s) tried on.”
At the end of episode 7, Thomas Godolkin shows the audience his true colors. He’s on a mission to rid the world of supes he deems embarrassing or weak, horrifically demonstrated by the violent death of a supe who could turn his feet into hands. Considering the increasing division between supes and humans in The Boys and Gen V‘s shared world, Godolkin’s resurrection could have disastrous consequences.
In that same TheWrap interview, Kripke confirmed that the boys The fifth and final season will take place roughly six months later Gen V season 2 ends. Given Starlight’s (Erin Moriarty) early interest in Godolkin and Project Odessa, these two shows might be more intertwined than ever before. Will the boys last season featured a twist as game-changing as the one in Gen V season 2?
The Gen V season 2 finale premieres October 22, exclusively on Prime Video.
