‘My boyfriend is 23 years younger than me – people think I’m his mum’

A couple have revealed that people mistake them as mother and son due to their age gap – but despite the critics, they are happier than ever and would recommend an age gap relationship to everyone

A woman says people awkwardly mistake her for being her boyfriend’s mum – but she couldn’t recommend her age gap relationship enough.

Rachel, 50, has been with her toyboy27-year-old Alex, who is 23 years her junior, for four years. But while the mother has a son just three years younger than Alex from her past relationship, this hasn’t gotten in the way of their love for each other.

Despite cruel comments from trolls, the happy couple say their difference in age “doesn’t define” their relationship. The pair met on a dating site after Alex decided to increase his age range in the hope of meeting an older woman—and came across Rachel, who was 46 at the time, and he was 23.

Shortly after the meeting, Rachel said she was going through the menopause. Now, four years on, they’ve stood the test of time and lovingly describe each other as their “twin flame” and “soul mate.”

The couple, based in the US, have shared details about their unconventional romance under the name @alex.michael13 in a video to TikTok, which has now garnered attention online. Rachel said some people just don’t understand her romance and will share their judgment of the pair.

“We were meant to do life together, we were meant to meet, we were meant to love each other,” Rachel said as she joked that she’s now a ‘cougar’. She said she was just a “mum minding my own business” when her “much younger” boyfriend came into her life.

But even though they are madly in love, they said their relationship is just like any other and “requires time and effort.” Alex has even told all of his TikTok followers to follow in his footsteps and consider pursuing a relationship with an older woman.

The pair also shared an insight into their relationship during an episode of Love Don’t Judge on YouTube and Rachel revealed the difficulty she had telling her sons about her relationship. She said it’s still a “work in progress” and hopes he and Alex can “bond better” soon.

It’s not all plain sailing, as the couple have to deal with a fair amount of criticism, with many people mistaking Rachel for Alex’s son. One person commented: “He looks more like her than her own son,” while another added: “She’s pretty but she clearly is trying to act and dress like she’s still a teenager. It reeks of desperation.”
