Even Charli XCX made a surprise cameo during Role Model’s appearance on Saturday Night Livethe Swifties quickly noticed one detail from the appearance.
While playing Sally during the musical guest’s performance of ‘Sally, When the Wine Runs Out’, Charli stepped out in a Max’s Kansas City shirt, which many on social media assumed was a jab at Taylor Swift after the Life of a Showgirl artist appeared to shade the Brat artist on the track ‘Actually Romantic’.
But as Role Model (real name Tucker Pillsbury) noted on his Instagram Story, Charli borrowed the shirt from him after he wore it during his promo with guest host Amy Poehler and cast member Bowen Yang. Last year, he released his sophomore album Kansas Anymore.
While Swifties have taken the fashion statement as a shot at the 14x Grammy winner, whose fiancé Travis Kelce is a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, the name printed on the shirt was actually that of a New York City nightclub that was open from 1965 to ’81.
After opening for Swift’s Reputation stadium tour in 2018, which Charli said felt like “getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds,” she shut down speculation that her 2024 song ‘Sympathy with a Knife’ was about Swift.
Meanwhile, Swift explained that ‘Actually Romantic’ is “a song about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about. And all of a sudden they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you’ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea.
“It’s presenting itself as them sort of resenting you or having a problem with you, but taking it and you just accept that as love and you accept it as attention and affection,” she continued. “And how flattering that somebody has made you such a big part of their reality when you didn’t even think about this. It’s actually pretty romantic if you really think about it.”
