Car expert shares how to heat your vehicle quickly in winter with a little-known button

The thought of going out to your car when the temperature has dipped below zero is not a nice one – but it turns out you don’t have to sit there for ages while your vehicle warms up

Winter mornings as a car driver can be really frustrating, especially if you’re waiting for the vehicle to heat up in freezing temperatures and you’re late for something.

But you don’t just have to sit there and wait, there’s a trick many drivers don’t know about, using just two buttons. If used in the correct way, these can help speed up the heating process massively so you can get on your way.

According to the driving expert behind Capturing Cars, you first need to put your temperature in your car up, as well as turn the fan up high, no matter what type of air conditioning you have. Then you need to hit the button which shuts “off the vents to the outside of the car and recirculates the air that’s in the car”.

“What that means is that each circulation of the air that’s in your car, it gets warmer on each pass, heating up quicker,” the driving expert said in a recent TikTok video. If the button is turned off it means you’re bringing in cold air from outside the car which then needs to be warmed up.

But that’s not all. According to the expert, you also need to turn on your air conditioning, as opposed to just your fan. “A lot of people think air conditioning is just for hot weather, it’s not, it literally does what it says on the tin. It conditions the air, whatever the temperature may be,” added the driving expert.

And it turns out many people weren’t clued up about it. “I had no idea AC worked to warm too!” said one person. Many people were worried that leaving the recirculation button on would cause the windows to steam up. However, turning the AC button on should combat this.

“How do people not know air conditioning removes moisture from the air. It’ll stop the windows fogging and dries the air so it warms up quicker. It takes less energy to heat drier air,” explained one person.

Another said: “Air conditioning doubles as a dehumidifier. So many people don’t know this. Works wonders in the winter when your windshield is all fogged up. Or when it’s raining/humid.”

A third added: “NOTED! I had no idea, I always turned the AC off because I thought it would make it cold.”
