‘I watched Disney’s Inside Out spin-off and it recreates the magic of Pixar’s best film’

A new spin-off series is now streaming on Disney+ and it expands on ideas put forward in one of Pixar’s best ever films

A new series streaming now on Disney+ manages to recreate the magic of what is considered by many fans as Pixar’s best film.

Dedicated viewers of the animation studio’s output, especially those who can remember the initial release of Toy Story way back in 1995, will most likely have a rotating top five of Pixar films.

Additionally, if anyone has ever said the words ‘it’s just like a Pixar film’, you know what kind of feeling they are trying to describe. Get ready to hear a lot of people say those words again as the Disney owned studio enters the world of television for one of its most ambitious series yet.

Dream Productions is a spin-off of Inside Out and the unique world of feelings that live within its protagonist Riley it introduced us to. The series follows the studio that produces Riley’s dreams and nightmares every night, and the conflict between the dream makers who work there. This premise was hinted at during one scene in the original film. The series asks if this idea can hold a full show and runs with it.

Acclaimed director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell) faces a nightmare of her own: trying to create her next hit dream Riley will remember forever after being paired up with Xeni (voice of Richard Ayoade), a smug daydream director looking to step up into the big leagues of night dreams.

One fan posting their review of the original film on Google said: “Inside Out was nothing short of a masterpiece, Pixar’s best since Toy Story 3 and one of their best overall.” That’s a very high benchmark to reach. Thankfully, Dream Productions clears that standard gracefully and makes me wonder what other spin-offs are just waiting to be made.

Many will say Dream Productions that it is just like a Pixar film but cut up into four parts. That’s true but that also underestimates the work each member of the cast, production crew and animators have done to put this series together.

This includes writer/showrunner Mike Jones, who has previously penned Luca and Soul for Pixar, while he was also part of the creative team on Coco, Elemental and Inside Out 2 among others. Jones ensures that each of those four episodes are perfectly paced and are crafted as fine episodes of television, rather than just a slimmed down feature film. In doing so, it loses none of the charm you associate with Pixar.

The typical jokes appropriate for a younger audience are present along with the cheeky satire for older fans too. So is a central lesson that seems to lie at every Pixar production. However, in doing so, it sits proudly on Inside Out’s shoulders and never drags, making for an overall delightful experience.

Dream Productions gave me the fuzziness I always feel watching Pixar’s best. If Inside Out is indeed one of, if not the best film produced by the studio, this spin-off series recreates the magic wonderfully. Even though I could see the next plot point coming, it didn’t stop me going all misty-eyed just like when I was introduced to Bong Bong for the first time in the original Inside Out.
