Where to watch 28 Days Later in the UK ahead of the ‘chilling’ sequel 28 Years Later

The Danny Boyle-directed horror 28 Years Later serves as a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later, which started Cillian Murphy as a bike courier who wakes up from a coma to discover he is living in a terrifying new world

The first trailer for Danny Boyle’s horror film 28 Years Later released yesterday (December 10), giving fans their first glimpse at Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy’s role which had so far been kept a closely-guarded secret.

The upcoming horror serves as a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later which followed bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) as he wakes up from a coma to find London deserted. He soon discovers a virus has swept society causing people to become violent, zombie-like creatures. Meanwhile the sequel, released in 2007, followed a different set of characters as they navigated the same outbreak six months later.

In yesterday’s trailer, eagle-eyed fans spotted a creature that bore a striking resemblance to the Oscar-winning Cillian, with speculation rife that it confirms his character Jim ultimately succumbs to the virus he escaped in the first film. Sony bosses previously hinted the star would return in a ‘surprising’ way in the third film.

The trailer has been hailed as one of the ‘best in years’ by fans, with many branding it ‘chilling’. It begins with a group of young children watching Teletubbies, before a panicked adult rushes into the room and demands they “sit still, keep quiet and don’t move”, before blood is seen splattering across the TV while the show continues to play.

Later in the footage, an isolated community is highlighted which is where viewers get their first glimpse at Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer’s characters, before an emaciated-looking Cillian Murphy rises from a field.

“That opening with Teletubbies and then cuts to immediate distress and chaos is so chilling. Its masterful. Absolutely beautiful. This trailer will be on repeat just like the trailers for Days and Weeks was when I was a kid,” shared one viewer as another gushed: “Once in a blue moon, a trailer comes out that makes you wanna go see it. This is definitely one of them.”

Given it has been more than two decades since 28 Days Later was released, many film fans are desperate to re-watch the first installment. So where is it available to watch?

While none of the major streaming services have the first film available in the UK, it has been announced that from Wednesday (December 18) the film will be available to buy or rent digitally. Previously, the best way to watch had been by picking up a physical copy.
