Parents Say ‘Yes’ More Often, Enjoy International Travel With Kids

AS My 2-YEAR-OLD SON HAPPILY TOUCHED THE DOOR HANDLE, WALLS, AND LOCK OF THE Bathroom festival – a portable toilet that smelled anything but fresa – i shuddered inside.

“Not Need a Wee-Wee after all,” he said to me, with a wide smile.

I Barely repssed what i could be only describe as a growl, nor i hurriadly let us out of the claustrophobic pod, trying hard to touch anything at all.

AFTER COVERING MY SON’S HANDS WITH ATBACTERIAL GEL, AND WISHING FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME WERE TAPS AND RUNNING WATER, I PULED MYSELF TOGETER AND WE HURRED TO JOIN OUR Friends and FamilyThinking How to be to be there.

IT HAD BEEN AN EXTRAordinary Few Months. The Decision to the Green Man Festival, Which Involved Camping for Three Nights in a huge open space in the welsh countryside Surrounded by thusands of Other festivalgoers – one that put with way out of my Comfort Zone – was the final culmation of our family Experiment. We had made it.

“No” was my default anSwer to the Most Things and I WANTED TO CHANGE THAT

My husband and i made a conscious months earlier to say “Yes” – Yes to our Kids, Yes to Each Other – Wenever We Could.

For me, it was going to be a bit of a stretch. I was Very aware that there are well some circumstances where i was Saying “No” nor a kee-live reaction.

For Example, One Day My Daughter Asked Something Really Simple. “PLEASE CAN YOU READ TO ME?” She asced. “Not right now,” i replied, and instantly cured myself.

I HADN’T THOUGHT ABOUT MY REACTION, I’D JUST SAID “NO” automatically, Because of saw it as a hass to stop what i was doing and what she wan instead.

But, Why was i tour Her down? AFTER ALL, I KNOW THESE YEARS WHERE SHE WANTS TO DO MUCH WITH WITH LIMITED. SO I BRAND UP MY FEEELINGS WITH MY HUSBAND AND WE CAME UP WITH A Potentially Fun Idea. We were Wold Try to Make Our Default Answer “Yes” when kids asced us to do something reasonsonable and also we were presented with options that is fun for our family.

Knowing that Our Daughter Was Starting School this fall only made the idea soundter better. We were going to be “Yes” People Eve IF IT MADE US FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.

We Leaned Into This Experiment with EveryThing We Had

The 10 months that followed led to some incredible experiences that of would have never done otherwise.

We were invited to Kenya for my sister and brother-in-law’s wedding blessing and i said “Yes” to taching the children, then 1 and 3, on boat trips and game drives i woud have been apprees of previously. To be honest, I was still apprehensive, but i did my best to push that aside so my husband and i could follow through promise to eAch other.

We Also Decidated to Book Plans Tickets and Go Island-Hopping Around Thailand For more than two weeks in april, Because a trip like that wastable besible after my daughter started school.

I Said “Yes.” And you know what? We survived it all. I’d End Say we thrived.

Our Biggest Stretch Went Better than I Expect

Of everything we aggregated to over the last few months, atttending a multi-day music festival who would involve was the acting of was apprehemous about.

We had deeded to go puuses my Brother-in-Law, His Wife, and Their Children have gone for years and had a great time. Be they kindly invited us to go with, we said “Yes” with Fully Thinking it Through. Nor the date great nearar, i got more and more woried about how everyone woupe, whereer we’d all smell, and if i’d ever fatel again. Eight thoughts about what to pack stressed with out for Weeks.

I will freely admit i’m not a camperbut the children were excited and ended up adoring the Experience. They Slept Well on their Roll Mats with their Novelty Sleeping Bags and They Love Having a Wet Wash Each Morning. ATTENDING The Festival was a huge success.

Our adventures have obviously taught with a lot and made me more comfortable with the unknown. And my kids have learned how to have confidence in new places, resilience, and the ability to arrive anyone and assimilate immediately. I’m so proud of saying and the People they are grown into, and i’m proud of my husband and i for getting out of our comfort zone, too.
