According to the report, prepared by researchers from the universities of Monash and Dikin, Muslim women and girls were the most targeted, as they constituted 60% of the victims of physical attacks, and 79% of the victims of verbal attacks, which were committed by men in most cases.
I discussed this topic with lawyer Ramia Abdo Sultan, a veiled Muslim woman and works as a consultant for community relations in the Federal Imams Council and asked her first if she was subject to harassment or attacks, and she answered that she, her daughters and a number of families were subjected to verbal harassment when they were on a picnic of camping between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne.
“Unfortunately, because of what is happening in Gaza, we have become victims of this issue. I am born and live here, but I felt for the first time that I am not Australian because of racial discrimination,” said lawyer Ramia Abdo Sultan.
“We went out to the families and my daughters veiled, and we went on a camping picnic, and we were subjected to bad words by a man, and he said to us, what did you do here and your place is not here and there was insults and the words are very impressive.”
In their study, the researchers relied on hundreds of communications submitted to the Islamophobia record in Australia, in addition to the analysis of 18,000 publications on the “X” platform, which revealed the extent of the anti -Muslims speech on the Internet.
The attacks escalated after the events of Gaza
The report indicated that a quarter of the recorded cases included violations against people publicly expressed their support for the Palestinian cause, after the attack led by Hamas against Israel in October 2023.
Islamophobia reaches “crisis levels”
Dr. Nora Aman, Executive Director of “Islamophobia record in Australia”, said that the data confirms that the issue is no longer ignored.
“Evidence is conclusive, Islamophobia is not just a reality, but has reached the levels of the crisis in Australia,” she added in a statement.

The report showed that more than 60% of recorded accidents fall under the category of intimidation or verbal harassment, while 9% of the accidents were ranked as written threats or physical attacks.

In total, 309 incidents of direct attacks were recorded against Muslims, a number that reflects the escalation of challenges facing the Islamic community in Australia amid increasing calls to take strict measures to reduce this phenomenon.
“I contacted the police and made a report because we had reached the stage of fear of the worst,” Lawyer Ramia Abdo Sultan said.
Lawyer Ramia Abdo Sultan indicated that “there are cases of harassment and an increase in cases of attacks. Many cases come to me by women who call me legal consultations and ask me what we do.”
Australia witnessed individual attacks, whether hostile to Muslims or Semitism.
